“My French friend and I (English immigrants ‘ daughter) go several times a year to the English stand up evening at the spotlight. We both need to laugh to let off steam , there’s something really special about the fact that it’s in English. The audience is more eclectic than a standup crowd usually would be (Anglophiles from all over the world who happen to be in Lille, plus locals), you can take a drink in from the bar, and enjoy. The supporting acts can be surprisingly good , especially when they’re pro French comedians trying their hand out in English, and the headliner is always an experienced comedian who has honed their skill. Sometimes I think “why are they here and not somewhere bigger ” but I’m honoured to be in their “warm up” audience.”
